Astral rifts are tears in time and space that lead to other universes. With Astral Planes enabled the galaxy will generate a new kind of celestial object called an "Astral Scar", which can potentially open up into an Astral Rift. The first time an astral rift is encountered, it starts the A Rift in Space situation. Each astral rift provides a deposit of Astral threads.png 2 astral threads which may be exploited by constructing a research station above the astral rift. Completing any chapter usually grants a reward of Astral threads.png astral threads as well. The name of an astral rift only becomes visible after its first chapter has been completed.

Completed astral rifts have a 2% chance to spawn the renowned paragon Mercedes Romero.

Exploration mechanicsEdit

Exploring an astral rift requires the rift to be within the empire's borders, the   Rift Sphere technology, and a   scientist and science ship assigned to it. The scientist remains within the rift and uncovers its secrets over the course of multiple chapters, with each chapter providing a part of the rift's story.

Result total Outcome Exp
≥ 14 Completes the current chapter 75
10 - 13 Adds 2 clues for the next phase 40
5 - 9 Adds 1 clue for the next phase 25
4 ≤ May trigger failure, or no effect 10

Exploration proceeds in phases of 90 days; this time can be modified by leader traits and other modifiers. At the end of each phase, a die is rolled, with a random result from 1 to 10; adding the current number of clues and the scientist's Astral Rift Skill and subtracting the chapter's difficulty gives the total result, as in the following formula:

 .

The scientist's skill is equal to the scientist's level, plus any modifiers from leader traits, including councilors .

A result of 14 or greater completes the current chapter; a result of 10-13 adds two clues for the next phase, a result of 5-9 adds one clue, a result of 4 or less adds no clues. Completing the chapter gives the scientist 75 experience; finding two clues gives them 40 experience, one clue 25 experience. Even when finding no clues still gives the scientist 10 experience. Clues gained from events, however, do not automatically give experience.

Finding no clues has a 1.5% (0.75% for empires with the   Riftworld origin) chance of failing the chapter. Only some certain chapters can be failed as most don't have a failure effect.

Exploration of astral rifts cannot be done by councilors and cannot be stopped once started.

6b. Escape, gives   96x unity output (2000~2 000 000),   large astral threads reward (140, 150, or 160), ends the rift & crisis

Exploring the Strange Wormhole reveals it leads to a system at the center of the galaxy called azilash. The system is guarded by 8 hostile Aberrant fleets of 8 cruisers each (5k power each at civilian difficulty, scaling up). Destroying all fleets spawns the Formless in a Dimensional Anchor and starts the "The Seal" situation. It is recommended to wait with this until one is ready to deal with the large invasion fleet that will come after. While the situation is active, the Aberrant invade the system every year, with the situation detailing the exact invasion day and offering approaches that grant combat bonuses in the system (either shield health at the cost of   10 astral threads or energy damage at the cost of   50 exotic gases). The situation is aborted if the Formless are attacked at any point. The Aberrant will attempt to destroy the Formless Dimensional Anchor. If the Dimensional Anchor is destroyed, the system is destroyed and the empire that had the The Seal situation gains a moderate amount of   physics research.

The Formless can be contacted via diplomacy and bring the option to pay   100 astral threads to give them a fleet of 10 cruisers. They use the same ship components as the Extradimensional Invaders. This can be done twice.

The azilash system contains deposits that total   1 astral threads,   10 rare crystals and   10 physics research.

If the situation is completed, the azilash system gains a size 40 Gaia World with the    Formless Haven modifier and brings the following three options.

  • Gain the zadigal legendary paragon and every 10 years the empire can choose an additional reward: a fleet of 16 extradimensional cruisers,   100 astral threads or a random   physics technology (or a very large amount of   physics research if all non-repeatable technologies are already researched). If the Unbidden, Aberrant or Vehement are present in the galaxy the Formless can be asked for a +10% damage boost in exchange for   2000 astral threads. The cost must be paid separately for each extradimensional invaders faction.
  • Demand subjugation. The chance of success is 75% and increases with every astral rift explored. If the Formless accept, they colonize the Gaia World and become a   Luminarium subject and the empire gains the   Eternal Throne relic. The Formless start with   −100 Loyalty but have high growth for it. If a starbase was already constructed in azilash, the Formless gain control of it. If they refuse subjugation, they become hostile.
  • Become hostile towards the Formless. They gain 2 fleets of 32 cruisers each. If the Formless are defeated, the empire gains the   Eternal Throne relic and   1000 Astral Threads. This is the only option for     Genocidal empires.

Empires who did not receive the Study the Crystal Sphere situation can still find the Strange Wormhole in the empire who did, but will not be able to traverse it even if they have wormhole travel. After the situation is complete, the azilash system will be visible on the map if sensor range reaches the galactic core, but it will remain out of reach even with Jump Drives. With the   Overlord DLC enabled, a Quantum Catapult can be used to catapult fleets to the system, which will trigger the The Seal situation as if the wormhole had been entered.

Precursor astral rifts lead to universes where the precursor civilizations from the   Ancient Relics DLC are still alive. The astral rifts will have additional narration if the matching precursor story has been started, and especially if it has been completed, but options and rewards are the same. Additionally, having the respective precursor chain started will double the chance to get these rift, while having the chain finished will quadruple the chance.
