I don't understand why you even need to use 7-Zip or Winrar to do this when Windows' Explorer is more than sufficient to handle the compression/decompression.

  1. Rename the save file 2200.01.01.sav to
  2. Double-click open the zip (like you would for a folder) in Windows Explorer
  3. Move or copy that gamestate file outside of the folder so you can edit it in Notepad++
  4. Once you're done editing and saved, drag/copy the gamestate file back into that zip file and say yes to replace
  5. Rename the save file back to

You don't need Winzip, Winrar, 7-Zip, etc. to do this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ahhheygao (Talk) 13:10, 19 May 2016‎ (CEST)

YMMV. My Windows 10 Explorer does not zip the file in a way that Stellaris can read it. Simply copying the gamestate file out and then back in invalidates the save. The 7-zip method is necessary for me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pleonast (Talk) 21:24, 27 May 2016‎ (CEST)
Same here using Windows 7, only the 7zip solution worked. -- 12:42, 11 June 2016 (CEST)
Also, use 7-zip 9.20, I tried using 16.04 and the game couldn't read the save. When archived by 9.20 (with exactly same parameters), save loaded correctly — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 22:24, 11 May 2017‎ (CEST)
