Version

This article is for the PC version of Stellaris only.
A job is where Pops work to produce resources on planets. Jobs are divided into different strata, with one higher than the other. Most Jobs are created by Districts and Buildings and thus limited in number.
Pops will automatically fill empty Jobs that they are capable of holding and will choose the job that will get the most out of their traits based on a weighting system but priority can be set towards and away from specific Jobs to ensure they are filled before others. New Pops that are more suitable for a Job than the current Pop holding the Job may take the job from it. It is possible to force a re-evaluation of jobs by blocking and then re-enabling the jobs.
Job category
Most jobs belong to a job category that groups it together with other similar jobs. In many cases, modifiers that effect job output and upkeep apply to every job in that category. For example, Mineral Purification Plants add +1 Mineral output to Miners. This doesn't apply to just the specific
Miner job, but to all jobs in the Miner jobs category (even if they don't normally produce
Minerals), including but not limited to
Scrap Miners,
Mote Harvesters,
Gas Extractors,
Crystal Miners, and
Cave Cleaners, as well as the
Gestalt Consciousness versions of all these jobs. And because the Miner job category is a subcategory of the Resource-Producing job category, any modifiers that apply to all Resource-Producing jobs (such as the output and upkeep increases from the
Improved Production technology) also apply to all Miner jobs.
Certain jobs which can never have a resource output or upkeep, such as Clerk, don't belong to any job category.
Unemployed is not a job and doesn't belong to any job category either (it's a subcategory of a planet's
Pops instead).
Job category modifiers
Not including triggered modifiers coded directly into jobs or modifiers that apply to general resource production. Multipliers propagate to subcategories but changes to base production don't.

Regular empires
![]() |
Please help with verifying or updating this section. It was last verified for version 3.2. |
Regular empires have three strata. If a pop takes a job above its stratum it will be promoted to the higher stratum. If there are no available jobs of equal or higher Stratum the pop will become unemployed, slowly demoting in stratum and causing happiness penalties at most levels of living standards.
Ruler jobs
For Ruler jobs new pops will only take the job from a current pop if the new pop's job weight is x5 higher. All ruler jobs have
−2 Consumer goods upkeep and primarily produce
Unity and
Amenities.
The main source of ruler jobs is a colony's capital building. It creates Politician jobs if the empire isn't
Corporate and
Executive jobs if it is. There are also several additional ruler jobs that are mainly added in limited quantities by certain planet-unique buildings. The only exception to this is the
Merchant, which is created by the unlimited Commercial Megaplexes building and can also be added by districts related to trade with the
Commercial Enterprise mercantile tradition.
There is also a set of mutually-exclusive civics available to non-corporate empires that replace half the politicians (rounded down) from the capital building with another type of ruler job. There's one civic of this type for every other ruler job except Executive.

Specialist jobs
Specialist jobs typically take one kind of resource - usually
minerals or
consumer goods - as upkeep and convert it into another type of resource.
For Specialist jobs, new pops will only take the job from a current pop if the new pop's weight is x1.5 higher. Pops with the Chattel Slavery slavery type cannot work Specialist or Ruler jobs. Other, more privileged, slaves may work on some Specialist jobs. See
slavery types for details.

Please help with verifying or updating this section. It was last verified for version 3.2. |
Gestalt Consciousness empires have only two main strata. Unlike individualist empires, drones can promote and demote in stratum immediately.
Menial Drone jobs
Menial Drones are analogous to
Workers in regular empires. All Menial Drone jobs are the same for both
Hive Mind and
Machine Intelligence empires.

Special job weights
Job weights that are rarely relevant to the player during normal gameplay, but are included here for completeness.
Driven Assimilator
If less than 1 year has passed since the game started, pops with the Cybernetic trait have small modifiers to certain jobs:

---|---|
×1.1 | |
×0.9 | Jobs:

AI Empire only weights
Warrior Drones have ×0 weight for AI empires with 11 or fewer
Pops
Brain Drones and
Calculators have ×0 weight for AI empires with less than 500
Minerals and monthly mineral income under 25
Crisis Purge
If the planet is controlled by the Prethoryn Scourge or the Contingency, the following jobs have ×0.01 weight:
Special jobs

Please help with verifying or updating this section. It was last verified for version 3.2. |
Unemployed
Pops that do not have a Job, either because none is available or because their Stratum is higher than that of available Jobs, are Unemployed. Unemployed Pops produce the following and cannot have their output improved by modifiers:
Living standards | Output |
---|---|
Any other | |
Social Welfare | ![]() |
Shared Burden | ![]() |
Utopian Abundance | |

Purging
Pops that have the Undesirable Stratum due to being purged produce resources as they decline based on the purge type. All Purging Jobs also produce +2
Unity if the empire has the
Fanatic Purifiers civic.

Subversive Jobs
High Crime, Deviancy or Unemployment can create planet modifiers that add Subversive Jobs. Pops will abandon Subversive Jobs if Ruler,
Specialist or
Soldier jobs become available. All Subversive Jobs have negative output.
