Patches and hotfixes are free updates for Stellaris, though they are different in purpose:

  • Patches fix bugs and/or implement balance tweaks. They are sometimes released alongside a new, major DLC. When this occurs, a portion of the DLC's features are usually shipped as part of the coinciding free patch, thus made available to anyone who has the base game. Patches are named by Paradox after various sci-fi writers.
  • Hotfixes are very small updates to the game that usually fix only a few bugs and may contain a few changes to the gameplay as well. Hotfixes are commonly released shortly after major patches to fix any unforeseen bugs that came with the previous update, or independently to fix newly discovered bugs or exploits.
  • Note that newer DLCs cannot be activated if you are playing on an older patch version. This is also applicable to mods, which have various levels of compatibility with new patches.

Rollback[edit | edit source]

Patches, specially major ones, can introduce anomalies or incompatibilities with save files and mods from older versions. In this case, if playing on Steam, a player can roll back to a previous version in order to preserve their current playthrough. The most recent version of each major patch is available, although intermediate bugfix and hotfix patches are not.

  • On Steam, right-click on the game in your library and select "Properties" then "Betas." In the "Select the beta you would like to opt in" drop-down, choose any past version of the game.

In order to roll back to versions older than 2.1.3, some additional steps are required in order to comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation that they predate[1]:

  1. Go to https://accounts.paradoxplaza.com/games and log in with (or create) your Paradox Account.
  2. Scroll down to "Access earlier versions" and click SHOW.
  3. Copy the access code listed next to Stellaris.
  4. Link your Steam Account to your Paradox Account, if you haven't already:
    1. At the top of the page, click Settings.
    2. Under Account Linking, click the "Link account" button next to "Link your Steam account."
  5. In your Steam library, right-click on Stellaris and open Properties.
  6. In the BETAS section, enter the beta access code you got from the Paradox website and click "Check Code" to unlock roll back versions all the way back to 1.0.3.
  7. Select the version you want from the drop-down list.
  8. Wait for the version to be downloaded and installed, then launch the game.

It is not possible to revert to an earlier version if the game was purchased on Microsoft Store.
