A Spaceport is a large space station that serves as the primary point of defense and orbital construction facility of inhabited planets. They can be built directly from colonized worlds, without the need for a construction ship. Spaceports are the only location where ships can be constructed and can be upgraded with modules that provide various bonuses to the spaceport or planet. A spaceport's internal framework itself can be upgraded in order to allow for the construction of larger ships and additional spaceport modules. A newly built spaceport has two module slots, one of which is taken up by its defense system (chosen when construction of the spaceport is initiated). Each additional level unlocks another module slot, to a maximum of seven at level six. Each spaceport level also increases its damage and defensive capabilities. Ships in orbit around a spaceport have a reduced upkeep cost of -25%, which can be increased by certain modules.

Aside from building and maintaining ships, one of the main functions of a spaceport is to increase an empire's Naval Capacity. This increase in empire Naval Capacity scales with the level of the spaceport.

Spaceports can be built on any colonized world for a cost of 300 Minerals.png Minerals (though ruler traits can make them cheaper) and take 12 months to build. Once built, they have a base maintenance cost of 3 Energy Credits.png Energy per month. The spaceport can be upgraded, with an increasing mineral cost for each level. Each level takes 180 days (6 months) to build.

Modules

Modules are unlocked through research, with none except for the initial defense modules available at start. Modules have a wide variety of effects, such as increasing its defense capabilities, producing resources, or faster ship build speed.

Note that the Fleet Academy's and the Engineering Bay's Ship Modifiers are only applied to ships produced at that specific Spaceport, and not necessarily to ships merely docked at the spaceport as the Crew Quarter's modifiers do. You can, however, upgrade ships made at spaceports without these modules by upgrading at a station that has them.
